White Ink Business Cards Information
What is white ink?
It is exactly what it says on the tin! There is no white ink in the CMYK print process. The four colours Cyan, Magenta, Yellow & Black are used to create the whole spectrum of printed colours. The white you see in your design is actually the lack of ink and is the white paper or card.
With the edition of a fifth colour - white, you can free your creativity and brighten up your world by using vibrant coloured card or more understated tones. You can create effects like white ink on back business cards.
Not all white ink business cards are printed the same. BrunelOne use state of the art HP Indigo printing presses, these presses produce the best results in the industry for white ink. The electostic ink is far superior to any other white inks, the HP Indigo is unrivalled in the digital print market.
We print white ink business cards with a minimum of 4 layers of premium white ink. This gives a clean brilliant white image, with 81% opacity. This produces a much better product than UV Flexo or Screen printing.

How to set up your artwork file with adobe Indesign / Illustrator.
White ink business card printing requires a specific set up in comparison to CMYK. You MUST use professional design software. We recommend Adobe InDesign or Adobe Illustrator.
Open your design sofware and create an artboard 85mm x 55mm add a 3mm bleed. The resolution setting must be 300dpi and CMYK.
Create a new layer, call the layer White
Please note our white ink software is case sensitive so you will need a capital W
Once you have created this White layer, you need to create a new swatch.
In InDesign click > Window > Colour > Swatches. The swatch pallet will appear.
In Illustrator click > Window > Swatches. The swatch pallet will appear.
Click on the top right-hand corner of the swatch pallet, select Add Swatch / Colour Swatch.
The Swatch must be set up like this:
- Change the swatch name to White
- Change the colour type to Spot Colour
- Colour mode must be CMYK
- Make the colour 100% Magenta
Select the background artwork layer and copy all your elements, Paste these in place (mac B) (or Ctrl B). Fill elements and strokes with your White ink swatch.
InDesign: Click > Window > Output > Attributes. Then select then select the artwork on the White ink layer and tick the box Overprint Fill or Overprint Stroke.
Illustrator: Click > Window > Attributes. Then select then select the artwork on the White ink layer and tick the box Overprint Fill or Overprint Stroke.
Save your document as a PDF. Change the compatibility to Acrobat 8 (PDF 1.7).
